318. genus, Takayama de Salas, Bolch, Botes et Hallegraeff
319. gen. nov., is described with two new species
320. isolated from Tasmanian (Australia) and South
321. African coastal waters: T. tasmanica de Salas, Bolch
322. et Hallegraeff, sp. nov. and T. helix, de Salas, Bolch,
323. Botes et Hallegraeff, sp. nov. The genus and two
324. species are characterized by LM and EM of field
325. samples and laboratory cultures as well as large
326. subunit rDNA sequences and HPLC pigment analyses
327. of several cultured strains. The new Takayama
328. species have sigmoid apical grooves and contain
329. fucoxanthin and its derivatives as the main accessory
330. pigments. Takayama tasmanica is similar to the
331. previously described species Gymnodinium pulchellum
332. Larsen, Gyrodinium acrotrochum Larsen, and G.
333. cladochroma Larsen in its external morphology but
334. differs fromthese in having two ventral pores, a large
335. horseshoe-shaped nucleus, and a central pyrenoid
336. with radiating chloroplasts that pass through the
337. nucleus. It contains gyroxanthin-diester and a
338. gyroxanthin-like accessory pigment, both of which
339. are missing in T. helix. Takayama helix has an apical
340. groove that is nearly straight while still being clearly
341. inflected. A ventral pore or slit is present. It has
342. numerous peripheral, strap shaped, and spiraling
343. chloroplasts with individual pyrenoids and a solid
344. ellipsoidal nucleus. The genus Takayama has close
